Abstract. We intend to find a way for assisting the mechanism designer at the early beginning of the designing phase. Our purpose is to define the general architecture of a mechanism made of N elementary mechanisms serially connected. We introduce the notion of skeleton and present a model of such a mechanical structure in order to solve the geometrical synthesis problem with an optimization method. The example of a three stage gear reducer is provided.

1. Problem setting

2. Geometrical study of a few reducer stages

3. Geometrical model of a reducer

4. Expression of the optimization problem

5. Conclusion
